We are planning to be in the Osoyoos area week of August 17 and would like to know if we had a day which wineries would should be on the list to visit. We will be landing in Kelowna and driving down. Also, this there any other sights that would be worth seeing area the area?? One destination mentioned in this post We go to the Okanagan 3-4 times a year as we have family there and own a vacation property in Osoyoos. I'm not a big wine drinker but I love to visit the wineries just for the beauty of their settings. Starting in Kelowna and going south to Osoyoos, here are a few that you could do in a day without leaving the main route: Mission Hill, Quails Gate, Greata Ranch, Sumac Ridge, Tinhorn Creek, Silver Sage (personal favourite), Burrowing Owl, Nk'Mip.

There are many more that are just a few kilometres off Highway 97: e.g. Naramata Bench wineries near Penticton; Bottleneck Drive wineries near Summerland; Hawthorne Mountain (aka See Ya Later Ranch) in Okanagan Falls. Sumac Ridge is a personal favourite, and I think they started this whole BC wine thing, so it's well established. The other one that I always hit, and every time I mention it to a friend they exclaim "Oh, yes, I love that one too!" is Hester Creek, which is RIGHT across the road from Geringher Bros, which I also like. Inniskillen is just down the road from those two. They have wonderful wine (and are trying the Okanagan's first Zinfandel), but are a bit pricier. Thank you for your quick responses. We have Inniskllen in Ontario around the Niagara Falls area too. Along with hundreds of others. What I am also trying to find out is if there are any other types of wines that Osoyoos does not have that Ontario might, since I am planning to bring about half a dozen bottles from Ontario that I will be sharing with the friends we are visiting.

One just added on my list will be an Inniskillen Zinfandel. 2 destinations mentioned in this post Mission Hill for the incredible grounds and lake vista. See-ya-later for lunch on their deck. (Take lunch from the deli in OK Falls) Tinhorn Creek for walking their display vines to see the varieties close up. Quinta Ferreira a special family making some very good wines. Try their Malbec but especially their Obra-Prima. Burrowing Owl for accomodation. NK’MIP Cellars for dinner and view of Osoyoos lake. Don't forget the Golden Mile near Oliver, the building looks like a small castle, the entry doors are very impressive. I think it's on Road 13 on the west side. Oh, and Silver Sage. They have an incredibly distinctive Sage Gwertztminer, that is fantastic with roasted chicken, and wonderful sweet fruit wines that are comparable to a port or desert wine. As far as varieties to bring with you from Ontario, I'm not sure. The Zinfandel is a good idea. We have good Merlot here, and Cab Sav.

On the white side, we have quite a good range of Pinot - blanc, gris, Auxerrois. Chardonnay, Gwertz, Sav Blanc, all found here. Thanks all for your insight on the area, and for the suggested wineries. Turns out the Inniskillen in Ontario has not perfected the Zinfandel brand yet. One other question...we will be driving over to Courtenay after and would like to know what would be worth seeing along the way, if we had one day driving there. Hi...there are a few wineries not to be missed. I have worked in the industry and am a local so let's start at Westbank, south of Kelowna, on the way to Osoyoos. Mission Hill Famiy Estate, off Hwy 97, has the most stunning views of Okanagan Lake you will find anywhere in the valley! The winery was renovated in 2001 and has the most interesting architecture with its 14 story bell tower (full peal at noon and 5pm) The Terrace serves local cuisine and has been voted Top 5 Winery Restaurants in the World by Travel Leisure Magazine. Otherwise you are taking your chances on the first come-first served.

Tours include wine tastings and the tour guides/associates are the best! My favorite tour is the Discovery if you want to learn more about the viticulture of the Okanagan Valley as well as the history of the estate. Check out the red wine barrel cellar ...blasted out of volcanic rock! You will see that on the Discovery tour as well. They produce wines that have won international awards. Across the road is Quail's Gate Estate which has a fabulous view of the Lake from the tasting bar and their restaurant. You won't be disappointed in either! Making your way to Penticton, on the east side of the lake is Naramata, where you will find a large number of wineries. Always on our list is Lake Breeze which has a fantastic patio restaurant and we loved our meals last week. You might want to make a reservation! Came home with a beauty of a Gewurztraminer. Poplar Grove winery is known for their cheeses. Hillside is another I have visited but not recently. If fruit blended wines are of interest...

Elephant Island should be on your list. Apple, pear and blackberry are some they produce. Between Penticton and Oliver is a small town, Okanagan Falls, and is home to a favorite of the family, See Ya Later Ranch. The patio has an unique view of the valley and produces a number of fabulous wines but my all time favorite is their yummy Riesling! (my profile photo is that view) Pairs so nicely with all the spicy dishes... Heading south between Oliver and Osoyoos is the Okanagan's best vineyards, named "The Golden Mile," with many great wineries. Don't miss The Burrowing Owl...they have accommodations and a 5 star restaurant where everything on the menu is fabulous! My husband and I go there at least once every year. Their cheese plate (all locally made) is the best the Okanagan offers and the presentation is lovely...on a wine stave! My fav is their Pinot Gris. Inniskillin has a winery here as well as in your area so you might want to include this quaint winery on your trip. I am not a big red wine fan, but I will drink a bottle of their Sangeovese!

Smooth and not tanic! To name a few more there are: Jackson Triggs, Gehringer Brothers, Nk'Mip and Tinhorn Creek on the same highway. Get a Wine Tour Map from the tourist center before heading out so you don't miss their turn offs. Hope this has been helpful in planning your trip and if you want anymore info don't hesitate to ask! You asked for different wines...Mission Hill has their Legacy series- Perpetua (3 clone variety of chardonnay), Quatrain (unique blending with Syrah) and their signature, Oculus (blend of cab sauv, merlot, cab franc and petite verdot) These were created for the cellar. Their 2006 riesling ice wine won international gold medal, but I think their Late Harvest Riesling or Vidal is wonderful paired with a nut and dried fruit plate. Quail's gate Chenin Blanc is fine! Elephant Islands' fruit wines... On Narmata bench look for La Frenz and Nichols.. small , local, very good wines. for a fabulous Gwertztraminer. I really like the cassis from Elephant Island..
