In a follow-up to a 2012 report on concerning levels of arsenic in more than 60 types of rice, Consumer Reports has released new information about the carcinogen in rice products. After reviewing 656 processed rice-containing products, they found that rice cereal and rice pasta "can have much more inorganic arsenic … than our 2012 data showed," the organization said. Arsenic is a mineral in the earth's crust and is released into the environment through pesticide and fertilizer, meaning it shows up in soil and water. Rice absorbs it better than many other plants. Organic arsenic is less toxic than its inorganic counterpart. Consumer Reports found that white basmati rice from California, India and Pakistan, as well as U.S. sushi rice, has about half the inorganic arsenic amount of many other rice types.

On the opposite end, all types of rice — except sushi and quick-cooking — with a label from Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas or just the U.S. had the highest levels of inorganic arsenic. And some bad news for brown rice: often deemed healthier than its white counterpart, it has 80% more inorganic arsenic than white rice. But brown rice contains more nutrients, so the group doesn't recommend making a full switch. "Brown basmati from California, India, or Pakistan is the best choice (for brown rice); it has about a third less inorganic arsenic than other brown rices," the group said. Being regularly exposed to even low amounts of arsenic may up one's risk of bladder, lung and skin cancer, plus heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. It could also affect a growing baby's immune system. Though the USA Rice Federation says the benefits of brown and white rice outweigh the arsenic risks, Consumer Reports food safety experts say that the levels of arsenic are still troubling.
