According to Wine Spectator, there are dozens of restaurants in the area — from downtown L.A. to Pasadena and the South Bay — offering deliciously diverse wines.Wine Spectator’s 2014 Restaurant Awards, which highlights the eateries around the globe that offer the best wine selections, chose 3,748 award winners from all 50 U.S. states and more than 80 from other countries and territories, including many in Los Angeles County. Among the list of winners, Wine Spectator also named its first Grand Award winners, which the program’s top tier restaurants. Those in this elite group — representing 12 countries and 15 U.S. states — generally offer 1,500 or more selections, “with superior breadth and depth in many of the world’s classic wine-producing regions,” according to Wine Spectator.

The editors of Wine Spectator carefully assess each candidate, rigorously inspecting the wine program, cellar, service, ambiance and cuisine of the restaurant. The six top-notch dining destinations winners are Clos Maggiore in London; La Toque in Napa; Nice Matin in New York; Saison in San Francisco; The Stonehouse in Santa Barbara; and Studio in Laguna Beach. These Grand Award winners lead the 2014 Restaurant Wine List Awards, along with 68 others who have retained their status as a go-to experience for wine aficionados. According to Marvin R. Shanken, editor/publisher of Wine Spectator, there has never been a more exciting time to be a wine lover. The magazine began forming its best wine lists in 1981. This recent beach side addition is the first local restaurant from the Firestone Brewery and it’s the perfect spot to grab beers and some delicious eats with the kids.

It’s got the hipster cred and craft brews of a gastro pub, with a laid-back sports bar vibe complete with booths (which are made from old fermentation vessels) and big screens to watch the games. The menu offers a wide selection that includes woodfire pizzas, burgers, and fish and chips, but kids will especially love the dessert options, like churros and pie, that will give parents plenty of time for a second round. Golden Road Brewing Company They might have been purchased by Anheuser-Busch, but Golden Road hasn’t lost Its laid back neighborhood vibe. Walk into this place and the first thing that hits you is the sheer number of parents with wee ones. Heck, this place even has a kid’s menu and lawn games when sitting still becomes too tough. The 32,000 square-foot brewery and pub houses a 15-barrel and 50-barrel system in a former Southern Pacific switching station. You can still catch a train going by every now and again—a great attraction for the kids. Try the hand crafted Bavarian Pretzel with a side of spicy mustard and a tall pint of Golden Road Hefeweizen.

Did we mention there’s a doggie patio? You can bring Fido along, too. Good to know: Make use of the valet parking. It’s free and beats parking a few blocks away. Self parking is scarce. 5410 West San Fernando Rd. photo: Stacie A. via Yelp Originating in Pasadena, this chain has rapidly expanded across LA for good reason(s): the food is tasty, the beer selection is awesome, and it’s the perfect spot to enjoy it all with kids. From classic corn-dogs to the exotic bacon-wrapped street dog, Dog Haus has a brat selection that will please every palate. While the kids slurp down milkshakes with their hot dogs and fries, parents can unwind over a pint from their rotating selection of craft beers on tap. All of the locations serve up the same delicious options, but the shaded, outdoor patio and fun collection of board games make the original Pasadena biergarten the best for brews with tots. Speaking of which, did we mention they have amazing cheesy tater tots the whole family will want to share?

Tattooed waitresses and fedora wearing bartenders are friendly and ready to serve up kiddie favorites to the tots and cold micro-brews to the parents. Can’t decide on just one pint? Order the popular beer flight of six different brews. The whole family will love the made to order wood fired pizzas that come with a variety of organic toppings. They don’t mind special orders, which is great for picky eaters. Mohawk Bend even earned special mention by kids when we asked about their favorite meals in town! Good to know: Try going for an early dinner. The place is pretty empty, and the service is snappy. They play bean bag toss outside, you relax in or out with a drink—24 beers on tap, always rotating. (That’s at the Burbank location; our favorite when you’re with the kids.) And if you’re looking for something more than suds, there are also 10 wines and divine drinks where everything from bitters to tonics is made in house.

And the food isn’t an afterthought.  It’s local, organic, and sustainable—all the things you’re looking to feed your kids, in a casual and welcoming atmosphere. Tons of high chairs, a kid’s menu that pleases everyone, plus a pretty impressive vegan menu—what more could you want? How about the dozens of beers on tap, and they change regularly based on season and availability so there’s always something new to try. Let the kids help you choose brats or bangers from the meat counter, then watch as your dogs are grilled to order. EB’s Beer and Wine in the Original Farmer’s Market Most people know the Farmers Market for the sheer variety of cheap eats, but hidden in the morass of Cajun, Thai, French and Mexican food stands is EB’s Beer and Wine Bar. Show up on a Friday or Saturday night and enjoy live music and drink specials. There’s always a new beer on tap including local favorites from Golden Road Brewery. And the place is also right next door to a yummy Italian stand, where they sell pizza by the slice and small pasta plates for kids.

The beauty of this spot is that the kids can roam while you sit back and enjoy the open air space. Pack a deck of cards or your favorite board game and settle in for an impromptu family game night; anything goes at the Farmer’s Market. 333 W 3rd St. If you’re in the mood for some of the juiciest brats, links and dogs you’ve ever tasted, head to the German inspired Wurstküche, purveyor of exotic grilled sausages. Be adventurous with a grilled rattlesnake and rabbit link, but get the old-fashioned brats or vegetarian links for the kiddos. With over 24 imported beers on tap, you’ll be able to find something you like, and trying to find that perfect pint is half the fun. The extra crispy Belgian fries with homemade dipping sauces are sure to please everyone. Family style tables are great for crowds. Good To Know: Ask the bartender for a cup of crayons and the kids can make masterpieces on the brown paper covered tables while you wait for food or get lucky enough to enjoy a second round.
