The CFPPA in Beaune offers one of the best postgraduate wine degrees available in France. The course, intitled ‘CCIV - Connaissance et Commerce International des Vins’, now benefits from the prestigious ‘masters’ status. The Mastère degree is conferred by the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles de France to graduates from this 6-month plus practical work experience programme. Taught in Beaune, the Master of International Wine is a postgraduate degree open to candidates with undergraduate university degrees from all over the world. 40% of CCVIC Masters graduates are now from overseas, usually from Asia and North America. A Burgundian perspective on wines from the world over Perhaps the greatest advantage of the CCIV Master of International Wine is that the teaching staff are wine professionals based in the region. External teachers bring to bear their own practical experience. The course has three essential components: oenology, viticulture and commerce. The excellent quality of the oenology and viticulture teaching in particular reflects the centre’s location here in the heart of one of the world’s finest wine regions and the CFPPA’s links with the local wine industry.

Oenology course modules are given by Jean-Pierre Confuron, President of the Association of Oenologists in France, winegrower in Vosne-Romanée and technical director at Maison Chanson Père et Fils in Beaune. Viticulture is in the capable hands of Jean-Yves Bizot, a winegrower from Vosne-Romanée. Other members of the CCIV teaching staff include Jean-Pierre Renard, lecturer and wine writer (wine tasting), Alain Meunier of the renowned Domain Jean-Jacques Confuron, Martin Prieure (Domaine Jacques Prieure), the inimitable Jean-Pierre Charlot of the Domaine Voillot Joseph in Volnay and Jean-Claude Fournioux of the Institut Universitaire de la Vigne et du Vin. Commerce and trade aspects are covered by Michel Depretz of the Maison Albert Bichot, Jean-Marc Veuillet of Blasons de Bourgogne and François Denis of the négociants Lupé-Cholet. The CCIV programme combines practical, hands-on projects and field visits with academic classwork. Students learn through observation trips to most wine regions of France, to Italy and on extended stays in the United States and in Britain where they take the WSET Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Wines and Spirits with the UK’s top wine faculty at Plumpton College.

CCIV students with dizzying wine careers The proportion of foreign students has risen steadily. Now nearly half of admissions are from overseas, a large number are Korean, Japanese, Thai or Chinese. Course director Florence Zito explains the rise in Asian participation by the quasi spiritual dimension enjoyed by wine in the far east for the last few years.
