As previously reported by the drinks business, the Chinese online retail market is set to surge as China’s consumers spend more time online, and leading the emerging market is Wangjiu Online. With a strong focus on premium labels, Wangjiu was established in 2012 and has spent over £10 million on procurement and warehousing as well as its online wine retailing platform. ), Wangjiu has differentiated itself as a retailer of premium wines, while providing a bespoke “wine-customisation” service that it is currently providing to banks, media corporations, and private clients. This service allows clients to specify a preferred wine style, and Wangjiu will source a wine to fit the specification. In a campaign that is the first of its kind in China, Wangjiu released a wine on 17 May this year that was customised according to the popular polls and requests from over 200,000 consumers from its database.

The wine was created as the result of a collaborative research between Wangjiu Online and La Revue du Vin de France China to find out what wine would be most suitable for the Chinese palate. Consumers and wine critics in China went through a poll where they expressed their favourite styles of wine, the price they were most willing to pay for a bottle of wine, and other factors such as the weight of the bottle, the closure used, and even the wine label design. Based on the results of the poll, Wangjiu sampled wines from producers from over 50 countries before picking a wine produced by Château de Birot from the 2008 vintage, which the website named “Coup de Coeur”. The wine was released at ¥198 (£21), and all 12,000 bottles were sold out within a month from the release date. The artist Lee Ufan. Courtesy Studio Lee/Ufan Château Mouton Rothschild Lee Ufan, the reputed minimalist painter and sculptor, has been commissioned to design the label of the 2013 Château Mouton Rothschild wine. For his design, the Korean artist has employed one of his signature motifs, the rectangular blot, which in this case he has rendered in a suitable burgundy color. As the press release eloquently puts it (in the jargon of wine lovers): “In [Ufan’s] work for Mouton, the initially indecisive purple of the drawing gradually attains its full richness, just as a great wine is patiently brought to fulfilment in the secret of the vat house.”

The first commissioned artist was the painter Philippe Jullian, who created a label to commemorate the “Année de la Victoire,” the liberation of France in 1945. Each year since then, an artist has created an original design for the wine. Artists who have taken part in the tradition include Salvador Dalí (in 1958), Dorothea Tanning (in 1965), Marc Chagall (in 1970), Pablo Picasso (in 1973), Georg Baselitz (in 1989), and Lucian Freud (in 2006). Participating artists aren’t given any monetary compensation, but they do receive a number of cases of Château Mouton Rothschild wine as a token of gratitude. Considering that the current price of a bottle of the Lee Ufan edition wine is $359, it seems like a reasonably handsome (and tasty) reward. Château Mouton Rothschild is not the only company seeking the services of artists to revitalize their packaging designs and marketing campaigns.
