Instructions for the 2016 Questionnaire The New Zealand wine industry continues to show sound financial metrics in 2015 on the back of profitability in all but the smallest wineries and stable or increased gross margins across the board, according to the tenth annual financial benchmarking survey released by Deloitte. The turnaround in the New Zealand wine industry has continued in 2014 on the back of improved profitability across wineries of all sizes, according to the ninth annual financial benchmarking survey released today by Deloitte and New Zealand Winegrowers.
Vintage 2013 produced a record harvest of 345,000 tonnes of grapes; up significantly from the low 2012 vintage, however key learnings coming out of the tough times endured from 2008 are believed to be standing the industry in good stead to be able to deal with this increased supply. The results of the seventh annual survey on the whole confirms further improvement but there is certainly still a long way to go to be at a point where the financial returns from the industry provide an appropriate financial return on the capital invested. Trends that were present in past surveys of wineries being unable to make a profit, despite cutting costs and with relatively high inventory balances and debt levels remain.Toast Glasses - set of fourNeed some shatterproof glasses for camping, at the beach, on the boat, for the picnic basket or down at the river? All of our tours are personally guided by owner John Meadows, Auckland’s most experienced wine tour guide. We offer you a range of small group, usually from 2 to 8 people, personalised Day & Half Day scenic wine tours. 100% NZ owned & operated. Our tours visit some of the region’s finest wineries & vineyards in the West Coast (Kumeu, Huapai & Waimauku) wine area as well as the East Coast, Matakana, region and take in some spectacular rural countryside & coastal scenery on the way.
Depending on the tour you choose expect to see rolling green hills, Tasman Sea & wild black-sand surf beaches, native rainforest, Pacific Ocean with small picturesque beaches & bays, rivers & farms. The wineries we visit are generous with the range & variety of wines they offer for tasting, normally from 5-6 up to 10 wines and usually include several 'top-shelf' reserve, single vineyard, not exported, hand-picked, exclusive to the cellar door wines...! Talk to some winemakers, enjoy a delicious vineyard lunch (lunch is included in all our Day Tours), purchase your favourite wines at true cellar-door prices... please note there is never any pressure to purchase on our tours, I hate that kind of thing! All tours include central city area door-to-door service, airport & out of city area service is at extra charge. We can advise you on duty limits and shipping wine overseas. We are delighted to have been awarded a "TripAdvisor Certificate Of Excellence” four years in a row;
2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015. An award which rewards the consistent top ratings of our reviews from our customers... many thanks to everyone for their generous comments! The respected New Zealand tourism web site ‘Rankers’ operates the “TravellerVoted” Awards. These awards are also decided on by our customers entering reviews and ranking their experiences. We are delighted to have been voted winners of the “Best Wine Tour In New Zealand” category five times now, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 & 2016 and thank all our guests who entered their generous reviews. As you know these days travellers rely greatly on the reviews & comments of others on various web sites. I trust you’ll be assured of both the quality of our service and the wineries we visit if you take a look at our reviews. Look here to see more reviews of our tours, make sure to come back! “... of all the wine tours I’ve had this is one of the most Elizabeth Ferrer, Wine Spectator Magazine, New York
We realise all the options, regions, strange names etc can get a bit confusing when you’re not familiar with this area so to help you select your tour here is a brief explanation of the differences between the two main regions we visit, Auckland’s West Coast area (Kumeu, Huapai & Waimauku) and the East Coast’s Matakana. If you are comparing our tours to ones with similar sounding descriptions I think you’ll find our tours usually include more and cost less! This is where NZ’s wine industry was founded by pioneering settlers from the Mediterranean coast of Croatia well over 100 years ago. It’s an area steeped in local wine history and features many well known heritage wineries. Wineries in this region source grapes from their own local vineyards in the West Auckland area as well as New Zealand’s other premium grape growing regions including Marlborough & Central Otago in the South Island and Hawke’s Bay & Gisborne in the North Island. This means they are able to grow a wide range of different types of grapes in optimum conditions (soil types and climates) from which they produce a wide variety of wine types, everything from Sauvignon Blanc & Pinot Gris to Cabernet/Merlot & Pinot Noir.
It’s what I like to call the “New Zealand wide wine tasting experience”. We visit a wide selection of long established, 3rd generation, family run wineries as well as some lesser known small to medium sized ‘boutique’, family run, wineries. The Tasman Sea, wild black-sand surf beaches, native rainforest & rolling green farmland are the settings for these tours. Our ‘West Coast’, Day and Half Day Tours as well as the ‘Waterfalls & Wines’, ‘Volcanoes, Vines & Wines’ & ‘Coast to Coast’ Day Tours visit this area. With Auckland’s most experienced wine tour guide our aim is to customise your tour to your tastes and interests. Matakana, North East of Auckland, is one of New Zealand’s newest and smallest wine areas. All the wineries of the Matakana area are small, family owned & operated, ‘boutique’ producers. Across the region they each grow a wide selection of grapes on their own local ‘estate’ vineyards to produce their exclusive wines.
Some of the wines you can expect to find include NZ’s only Carmenere and our only winery making exclusively ‘Italian’ reds; There is also Pinot Gris, Albarino, Chardonnay and sometimes Roussanne, Voignier. Other reds include Syrah (Shiraz), Cab’ Sav’, Merlot, Malbec, Cab’ Franc, Pinotage & Pinot Noir... something for everyone. Pacific Ocean views, rivers, small beaches & bays, beautiful countryside plus the a range of interesting side trips along the way including cheese tasting, a chocolate maker & honey centre with NZ's exclusive Manuka honey to try. Our ‘East Coast’ & ‘Coast to Coast’ Day Tours visit here. If you can’t decide which area to visit combine them with our ‘Coast to Coast’ Day Tour which visits both areas giving you the ‘best-of-both-worlds’! Anthony Paul Arizabal, San Francisco Caroline Freier, Great Britain Cruise Ship Wine Tours Over the years we have taken many people on our wine tasting tours who are visiting Auckland on a cruise.
We realise ships offer shore excursions but we believe a local, specialist, guide and a small group tour is much better value... and our prices, in NZ$$, are better value too! We pick you up depending on where your ship ties up; at disembarking area on Prince’s Wharf or inbetween 'The Cloud' & 'Shed 10' on Queen’s Wharf  or your city hotel before or after your cruise, and returned there (on time or a little early!) after your tour. Tour pick up/departure & return times can be arranged to suit your ship’s schedule and we guarantee to get you back on time! Please email john@winetrailtours.co.nz with your ideas and enquiries.
