When the same amount of wine was poured into each of these glasses, and examined at a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, the images revealed that a ring-shaped vapor pattern appeared at the edges of the wine glass.

“The surface area of the glass is responsible for bringing the flavors to the tongue along with other elements of the glass, like shape, surface area, and the lip,” says Blazon. “Putting an oaky and tannin-rich glass of red wine into a smaller, narrow glass would be startling, almost like a train hitting your tongue; the bold flavors of the red wine are too overwhelming.” Blazon recommends keeping one thought in mind when choosing how to serve your vino. “For the basic wine drinker, think smaller shaped glasses for white wine. For reds, you’ll want to use a larger wine glass; it helps to circulate red wine and open it up, and allows a little bit of maturation to occur within the glass.”Such a simple explanation for those of us who don’t want to read volumes of wine literature to figure out what glass to use.
