Do grocery stores in CA sell wine, or do I need to go to a specialty store? Any recommendations near where we're staying? We'd love to pick up some nice CA wines at decent prices. One destination mentioned in this post Grocery stores in California do indeed sell wine (and beer, and hard liquor).

Trader Joe's is a local favorite destination for wine at a fair price, though the nearest one from that hotel is a few miles away - 3212 Pico Blvd. Yes, grocery stores sell wine here. Will you have a car? Walking distance from your hotel would be Bay Cities, which is well worth the stop, anyway, to get a great sandwich, the best in town. They have a good wine selection, too. But Pavilions stores have a good selection of California wines under $15 a bottle. Also, Wine Expo on Santa monica at Yale is very good. We will have a car, but don't plan on using it for the 24-hour period we'll be in SM. We plan on doing a lot of walking and don't mind carrying a few bottles in our knapsack. Thanks for the info! (of course they're in Virginia as well). from Delmar-- Thanks so much for the tip about Wallys. We looked it up and it's exactly what we're looking for....and since we're headed to Hollywood from Santa Monica, it's right on the way. I think we'll be picking out a nice case of CA wine that we can't find at home and shipping it back to VA......

I'm following up on this post of mine from February. During our visit we visited Wally's (info & link above.) Let me tell you: Wow! If you like/love wine....this is the place to go! The staff was super friendly and they recommended some incredible, affordable bottles to us. We bought a case, put it in the trunk, and shipped it through with our luggage. (They packed it in 2 6-pack wine boxes.....no breakage! Thanks Southwest, and your 2 free bags policy!) I've since ordered another case of our favorites to be shipped here to VA....

Italian, French, California, Oregon and Washington dominate the selections, with a "Wall of Affordable Deliciousness" of top picks under $15.The Sunday tastings (2pm-5pm) feature lite bites ($10-$20) from restaurants like Sotto and Night + Market paired with lesser-known, small-production wines.

Now with two locations—one in Silver Lake and one in Downtown's Arts District—Silver Lake Wine is the quintessential neighborhood wine hub. You might call it "the people's wine store," as the staff here take pride in defining themselves by their customers. Every visitor gets the same treatment from an enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff who maintain their role to merely navigate the customer. You'll always discover something new as the selection—smartly chosen and constantly changing—is mostly small-production domestic and French with a smattering of natural European wines. In-store tastings are featured Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays; the popular weekend tasting requires reservations in advance. Lou Wine Shop & Tastings Opened by Lou Amdur in 2014, Lou Wine Shop is a friendly neighborhood store focusing on natural and unique wines. You'll often find Amdur roaming the sleek, modern space, offering advice to unsure customers or encouraging people to partake in one of the shop's weekly themed tastings (held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday).

K&L Wine Merchants is an L.A. staple with a long-standing reputation in the industry for its spot-on expertise. The second storefront—the flagship store is in Redwood, CA—is seriously stocked, serving Hollywood's wine collectors and winos alike. While vast, the store's layout is approachable—wines are organized by country and region and the friendly staff is always ready to help pick a bottle based on price point and style. Tastings take place on Thursdays (5:30-7pm) and Saturdays (3-5:30pm), but be sure to keep an eye out for the annual on-site Champagne tent sale in October, when customers can try 75+ Champagnes and partake in private winemaker dinners.

"'All things to all people' is the motto here," says general manager JB Severin. Whether you’re looking to spend $8 or $800, Wine House has options.
