The New World Wine Awards is one of the largest and most influential wine shows in New Zealand with more than 1,300 entries this year. Cleighten Cornelius, Mud House winemaker, was thrilled with the performance of the wines at the Awards. “It was a great harvest in 2016, with an extended warm autumn allowing excellent development of fruit ripeness and flavours. The Sauvignon Blanc expresses these qualities brilliantly,” said Cleighten. The judging panel at the Awards aligned the 2016 Mud House Sauvignon Blanc with qualities of rich, dense and concentrated flavours boasting lifted varietal, sweet gooseberry and apples, leading into a crisp long dry finish. Cleighten said although the harvest of 2014 was a more challenging one due to rain, the Riesling shone through, to produce a wine with bright citrus notes, giving way to flavours of crunchy nectarine and honeysuckle. “The juicy lemonade acidity of this wine delivers harmony and balance to the palate with subtle underlying textural minerality,” said Cleighten.
