Some wines definitely complement the flavor of certain types of foods, but in general picking a great wine to go with a great meal is as simple as picking a varietal you like from a range of good ones. The chart above (click to enlarge, or visit the full version at the link below) can help you when it's time to order.

It looks complicated at first blush, but the reason there are so many interconnected lines is because there are so many great pairing options for dishes that incorporate different ingredients. Enough, in fact, that you should feel comfortable tossing hard and fast rules out the window. For example, roasted veggies tend to go well with dry white wines, but if you're making a meal with fish and roasted veggies, you might consider a sparkling wine—there's no reason to wait until a holiday or celebration to open a bottle of bubbly. Similarly, red and cured meats pair well with bold or medium red wines like Malbecs or Temperanillos, but that cured meat and cheese plate you're enjoying may do just as well with a sweet white wine to switch things up.I'm a huge wine fan, and while I don't agree with the chart 100% (and I'm actually a big fan of breaking pairing rules in order to discover new flavors you might enjoy—ultimately, trust your palate over a chart—if you like something, drink it and don't stop because someone tells you to) it's a good way to mix things up if your idea of picking a good wine is still stuck at "red with red meat and white

Listed by state and scored out of ten, the vintage rating is based on the weather conditions that had the most impact on the growing season and harvest in that region, that year.

For ease of reference, the chart also comprises individual vintage ratings for Australia’s two most iconic wines; Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace. The vintage chart’s numerical rating out of 10 serves as a summary of the conditions that will have influenced the overall style of the wines from that region in that year. It is important to note that individual producers may still make outstanding wines even from difficult vintages, as quality is also dependent on key decisions made in the vineyard and winery preceding and during vintage. If you aren't on trick-or-treat duty, you might be inclined to turn off all the lights, put on some sweatpants, play "Hocus Pocus" on repeat and curl up with a perfectly balanced meal: the candy you bought "for trick-or-treaters" and a nice glass bottle of wine. But what if you've been pairing your sweets with the wrong varietal of vino?

Vivino, a wine-lover's dream app that provides information about wines when users scan a bottle's label, is here to help. Titled the "The Halloween Survival Guide For Adults," the app's second annual wine and candy pairing chart tells you exactly which red or white you should be drinking with your candy of choice. Reese's, for example, pairs well with both light and bold reds, while Skittles fair best with a dry or sweet white. CEO and founder Heini Zachariassen told The Huffington Post the chart is simply an extension of the app's mission. "Our candy and wine match maker is a fun way for our users to learn and talk about wine in a way that feels relatable and fun. Besides, Halloween is scary enough, we don't think picking a wine needs to be," he said. Of course, this knowledge can be used far after Halloween has come and gone if, let's say, you wait to buy the candy until it all goes on sale Nov. 1.
