This Top 100 list is a distillation of the very best of Spain based on the nearly 800 wines scored in a report published earlier this month. spent considerable resources and time conducting tastings in the region and meeting winemakers from all corners of the country. What’s clear to us is the rising prominence of small appellations like Galicia and the Canary Islands. Wines from these regions embrace their terroir and individuality and are diverse and exceptional. Truly, the age of over concentrated black wines is coming to a close for Spain. For our Wine of the Year, we landed on the Terroir Al Límit Les Tosses 2014, a wine made from an 80-year-old cariñena (carignan) vineyard planted on slate soils at a high altitude in Priorat. It is an achievement in winemaking as well as a kowtow to Spain’s old vine patrimony. The wine is incredibly polished and harmonious with an ultra-velvety texture and proves that Priorat is indeed capable of wines of balance and refinement. Our No. 2 wine needs little introduction.
