top wine brands globally

The family business behind one of Australia’s top selling exported wine brands, Yellow Tail, is establishing UK branch to market its wine across Europe. Casella Family Brands is a wine company based at Yenda in the NSW Riverina. It had been using Percy Fox & Co as its UK distributor of its popular Yellow Tail wine. However, Casella will take over its own distribution from 1 May 2016. Casella says it has a two-part expansion plan with Phase One focusing on ensuring it can sell Yellow Tail wine to customers in Great Britain. The second phase will involve introducing Casella Family Brands across Europe. Apart from Yellow Tail, Casella’s wine brands include Peter Lehmann, Brand’s Laira, Casella and Young Brute. The General Manager for Casella Family Brands Europe, Simon Lawson, said the UK has already delivered solid growth for Yellow Tail. “Yellow Tail wine currently the 3rd biggest Australian wine brand and the fastest growing top 20 wine brand,” Lawson said.

“Our vision is to leverage this position of strength and continue to drive growth within our portfolio for the benefit of our customers, suppliers and employees,” Lawson stated.

whats a good cheap dry red wineIf wine snobs are to be believed, it’s worth forking out a small fortune when buying a bottle.

wine and food dc But this isn’t always the case – as this £5.98 bottle of Malbec proves.
best boxed white wine uk Sold by Asda, La Moneda Reserva Malbec beat 16,000 rivals in a blind taste test last year to win the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards competition.

Decanter gave it 95 points (out of 100 – a huge feat, especially for a cheap wine) when it won the best ‘single-variety red costing under £15’ category. And such was the demand for the wallet-friendly wine, that Walmart had to start selling it over in the states for $6.96. So, how did one of the world’s best-rated wines end up on the shelves of Asda and Walmart – rather than somewhere like Harrods? Well, the answer lies in its not-so-romantic production. According to The Washington Post, the Malbec is produced by Chile’s largest wine exporter Ranco Wines, which ships more than 80 million litres of wine a year to over 25 countries. That works out at about 107 million bottles. Far from being a product of rustic barrels, it’s mass produced in large stainless steel ‘tank farms’ which can hold umpteen gallons – and that scale means that it’s cheap to produce in bulk. And in the case of La Moneda, it’s shipped to the UK where it’s then bottled.

The fact it’s packaged in Britain dramatically reduces the overall cost. The fact that it’s only available here at Asda also means that there is none of those usual marketing cost ‘s required when building a brand and pitching to various businesses. State-side, Walmart claims to have bought all the La Moneda that hasn’t been snapped up by Asda – meaning that although other American companies can ask to be a distributor, there isn’t any available to them. But whatever the reason, the point stands there’s world-class wine being sold at Asda for under a fiver. And it’s not going anywhere. See you at Asda, people. The good news keeps coming for Treasury Wine Estates and its core brand, Penfolds, which was named the world’s most admired wine brand for 2016 by Drinks International.

The London-based trade magazine polled more than 200 of the world’s top masters of wine, sommeliers, wine buyers and industry experts to come up with a top 100 brands. Penfolds beating last year’s winner Spanish brand Torres, with California’s Ridge Vineyards in third place, up four places on last year. The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands editor, Holly Motion, told Drinks International that some of the biggest brands don’t make the list. “There is no sure-fire way of getting into the top 50 and Penfolds’ ability to appear in all six lists is a testament to its brand identity and ability to not only stay in the Academy’s consciousness, but to push to the forefront of it.” Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said the winery was “chuffed” with the global recognition. “After 172 years in the wine business we’re still hungry, still excited and still eager to make better wine and champion new followers,” he said. The latest accolade follows Penfolds being named winery of the year in 2015 for the 25th year in a row by Wine & Spirits magazine, while the company was named 2015 international white winemaker of the year, by the International Wine Challenge.
