Sept 22 - 24 Selfies weren’t a thing yet in 2008. Neither were mobile apps, Instagram or kale. But Chicago’s world-class culinary scene was alive and well, and the Illinois Restaurant Association wanted to share it with the world. Chicago Gourmet was born. Luckily for us, Rick Bayless was quick to jump on board. Art Smith, Stephanie Izard, Paul Kahan and a host of other top Chicago chefs did too. Premium wineries and spirit companies were next to join in along with renowned Master Sommeliers Fred Dame, Alpana Singh, and Serafin Alvarado. Along the way we launched the website, developed the programming, and got the word out. Oh, and we held our breath. And then, in September, we exhaled when a terrific crowd of food and wine enthusiasts joined us for the first ever Chicago Gourmet in Millennium Park. When the weekend was over, one thing was clear. The Chicago Tribune’s Phil Vettel may have summed it up best when he said, “Everyone wants to do this again.” (Chicago Tribune, September 29, 2008)
We’ve grown up a lot since then. Title sponsor Bon Appétit magazine and presenting sponsor Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits are now valued partners. Hundreds of participants and thousands of guests join us every year for the main event, Hamburger Hop and other weekend events. And thanks to social media, selfies, and apps, Chicago Gourmet moments are not only shared in the park but with friends around the world. But the heart of Chicago Gourmet has remained the same and we’re proud to have a decade of lively cooking demos, expert wine and cocktail seminars, and delicious food, wine, spirits, and beer tastings under our belt. Our ever expanding belt. This September, we’re turning 10 and you’re invited to the party. Join us for a toast to a decade of Chicago Gourmet, a toast to our loyal guests, and a toast to hashtags, apps, and kale. Trust us, we’ll be toasting all day. Premium wine, spirits, and beer tastings, and gourmet food samplings from famous Chefs and their
