Back in 1982, Bombay Brasserie was created around the idea of bringing the cuisine of this great city to London and today’s menus reflect this ongoing exploration, featuring the freshest seafood, chicken, lamb and game, plus plenty to please vegetarian palates. Our menus feature a wide variety of cooking techniques, from slow-cooked curries to grills and kebabs as well as tandooris from the clay oven. Our wine list reflects a carefully considered selection of new and old world wines, specially chosen to complement our cuisine, with our sommelier on-hand to provide expert advice. With 24 hours notice, wines from the Bombay Brasserie Reserve list can be ordered, which include legendary fine wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Antinori Tignanello and Chateau Gazin. Men were in suits, women in their cocktail best, wines awaited the verdict, hands clapped in cheer and music reverberated through Sofitel at BKC as the winners of the first India Wine Awards were announced. Sonal Holland had been planning the awards for two years.

“If I wouldn’t have initiated it, someone else would have. But I feel responsible as the custodian of wine in India. The objective of the awards is to guide customers based on selection done through an objective scoring system. It will also offer winning brands an enviable advantage in the marketplace”. The awards not only invited participation from Indian wine estates, but also international wines that are imported in India from France, Italy, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and several other countries. 301 wines were judged over two days and categories were based on price such as budget, superior, premium, super premium as well as grape-type such as red, sparkling, white and rose. Trophies were given to the cream of the cream. The jury consisted 12 experts with diverse experience in wine: Sonal Holland, the chair; Subhash Arora, President, Indian Wine Academy and Founder-Editor of delWine; Sourish Bhattacharyya, noted food writer and blogger; Rojita Tiwari, certified wine professional and Founder of Drinks and Destinations;

celebrity restaurateurs Rahul Akerkar and Gauri Devidayal; wine writers and consultants Alok Chandra and Bhisham Mansukhani; Mumbai's leading wine retailer, Satyam Savla of Juben Wines; the Director, Food Design Studio, Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef and a certified wine professional, Shagun Mehra; the Hotel Manager, Four Seasons Mumbai, Jasjit Singh Assi; Shahrom Oshtori, Director of Food and Beverage, Sofitel Mumbai BKC; and sommelier at Sofitel Mumbai, BKC, Prateek Angre. The jury was divided into 4 panels, each required to blind-taste about 75 wines and asked to score them on 100 based on appearance, nose and palate with about eight to nine sub factors considered for each. Over 50% i.e. as many as 154 medals were awarded Silver, Gold and Diamond medals as well as 23 Best in Class Trophies for outstanding wines in the competition results. For the first time in an Indian competition awards were given to the best food and wine pairings in the course of celebrations. Winners also got glasses from Schott Zwiesel.

Post the event food critic Rashmi Uday Singh made a quick exit, while others lent their palates to wines being offered by the traders to sample. Rashmi Uday Singh & Sonal Holland.
