One reason for this is that they're choosing regions where there is great value for the wholesale cost of wine so they can keep their prices lower. Another reason is that their International wine buyer has different marching orders and standards than their domestic buyer. This translates into good everyday wine at a very fair price. This is one area where Vinesse has a black box. They don't discuss their curation process, but we do know that when a big shipment of wine comes in for evaluation, the Vinesse staff gathers round and tastes through it.

The most popular bottle disappear quickly and probably get put into shipments. When it comes to The World of Wine, while we don't know their curation process, we enjoy their curation style thoroughly. They're slowly teaching us how to navigate the different "lesser" wine regions of major wine-producing countries like France, Italy, and Chile. Vinesse is a more old-fashioned company. If you need to hold your service for a vacation or want to cancel your membership you'll need to call and speak to someone during regular business hours. You can handle reorders yourself online, as well as see a record of the wines you've received and when you received them. A personalized wine club used to mean you picked the color of your wine and how often you received your two-bottle selection. For Vinesse, it still does. Some additional personalizations include upgrading to more bottles per shipment and several options for how often you receive shipments. Uniqueness of the Wine Club - The Vinesse World of Wine Club is not especially unique—there are other clubs featuring International wine and even one that is very similar in concept to The World of Wine but offers a much higher quality wine (Le Metro).

It is unique to get a highly-curated, region-focused wine club for $20 a bottle and we think that's terrific. Vinesse is light on the printed materials and wine education. Each box comes with an introductory letter explaining the theme of the shipment, a note about the wines to be included in the next shipment, and often a recipe chosen to go with the food-friendly wines presented. Each wine has a tasting sheet with some high-level information about the region or grape or winemaker (but rarely all three) and a "vital statistics" section. Our favorite feature of this section is the "When to Drink" date—this important detail is usually left out of wine tasting notes from every source. Vinesse doesn't offer gift packaging but they do offer pre-paid subscriptions (you'll find this part during checkout) and you can add a gift message to your order. Better wine clubs for gifts are out there though, so we typically suggest you keep looking. You want an optional customizable and printable gift message for in-person gifts, to be able to set the date (roughly) of the first shipment, and something gifty in the first box to make it extra special.
