Fine Wine, Spirits & Gourmet Food Market Since 1968 Grande Marque Champagne Tasting Nearly 100 top Champagnes and sparkling wines will be poured! Place: Le Merigot Hotel Shop our 2015 Bordeaux Futures Shop our Burgundy Pre-Arrivals!Is it better to come empty-handed than to not come at all? That’s arguable, but there’s no question that presenting your hostess with a gift—especially one that fizzes and kicks off the festive spirit—demonstrates old-fashioned good manners. And though we may be inclined to pop the cork off a $90 bottle of Moet & Chandon Champagne for those closest to us, whipping out nearly an entire Benjamin for each of our holiday gatherings would get real expensive, real quick. An affordable bottle of sparkling, red, white, and even rosé wine, then, does the trick, especially when you’re headed to an event hosted by that friend of a friend of a friend. But how, exactly, are you supposed to find the wine that everyone begs for another glass of?
The secret is found in selecting a bottle that’s recognizable enough to grab someone’s attention, and, of course, from a vineyard that your liquor store’s sommelier considers legit. At $5 a bottle it’s almost as cheap as water, but a wine owned by a supermarket chain has just wiped the floor with some of Australia’s best known and loved wine brands to secure a coveted wine industry trophy.Even more shocking to the purists, it’s a private label wine.Coles has polished up its credentials in the increasingly popular private label wine category, which is snatching a growing slice of the Australian wine sector, after one of its store-owned brands won a prestigious wine award to beat out a field of 10,000 wines including branded labels. An Australian shiraz sold exclusively at Coles key liquor outlets, Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, First Choice and Liquor Market has been named as the best wine under $20 from Australia and New Zealand at the Winestate Wine of the Year Awards in Adelaide today. It is the first time a private label wine has won the award, as well as the cheapest wine to ever bring home the silver.A panel of expert judges including iconic Australian winemaker and pioneer Wolf Blass chose the Coles “Big & Bold Shiraz 2015” from a field of 10,000 wines.
The wine was produced by Victorian winery McPherson Wines, exclusively for Coles and is part of a growing army of private label wines that now fills the shelves of its supermarket liquor stores. At only $5 it will compete strongly with the private label wines offered by German discounter Aldi whose liquor selection, ranging from wines to beers and spirits, has been a strong drawcard for the new supermarket player.Ironically the wine award was sponsored by Aldi.Private label wine is gaining in popularity in Australia, with industry estimates putting its penetration at just under 20 per cent of national wine sales, although this level still lags other countries such as the UK where private label wines can account for more than 50 per cent of wine sales.Much like private label food, private label wine is a growing source of higher-margin profits for the supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles, with both retailers investing heavily in expanding their portfolio of exclusive, company owned labels.
These private label wines are also shedding their former reputation for being cheap and nasty, with both Woolworths’ and Coles’ exclusive brands winning awards as well as winning over shoppers. In the last 12 months Coles’ exclusive liquor products have won more than 50 medals and Coles boss John Durkan has highlighted his stores’ private label wines as a key strategy in the continued turnaround of the supermarket’s liquor arm.Mr Durkan, at a strategy update in June, mentioned the continued penetration of private label wines as a tenant of his five-year transformation plan for Coles’ liquor outlets, which have underperformed recently in the face of industry heavyweight Dan Murphy’s, owned by Woolworths.‘’Our exclusive brand strategy provides further opportunity to enhance our customer offer by having fewer, deeper relationships with suppliers, step-changing the way in which we engage customers on quality and value,’’ Mr Durkan said at the June Coles strategy update.
