Think inside the box when it comes to drinking wine this summer. Portable vino from a can or box no longer means sickeningly sweet budget blends chugged at college frat parties (sorry, Franzia). Winemakers are capitalizing on convenient containers perfect for warm-weather picnics, camping and beach trips. “Alternatives (to cork) wine closures and packaging have become more popular as wine consumers are becoming less discriminatory about packaging as long as the wine inside the package is of high quality,” says Michael Kaiser, director of public affairs for WineAmerica, The National Association of American Wineries. Boxed wine is one of the fastest-growing forms of vino packaging in the world, with global sales increasing 20% each year between 2000 and 2013, according to The Grapevine Magazine. And breaking the bottle habit has a slew of benefits. Boxed wine can stay fresh for six to eight weeks once opened. That’s because the plastic bag inside keeps air out and stops oxidation, unlike a bottle which allows air in after its uncorked.
Once a bottle is popped, its shelf life is only up to three days. There are environmentally-friendly pros too with less packaging, waste and energy needed to transport non-glass varieties. Find the right boxed or canned wine for any occasion this summer, whether you’re heading to a picnic or just a cozy living room couch date.Domaine Le Garrigon Cotes du Rhone Wineberry. Pack the charcuterie platter and get pouring. This purple-colored French wine pairs great with mild cheeses, meats and veggies perfect for any picnic spread. The juicy red is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan that make for a delicious, savory sip. The wooden box packaging even has a carrying strap to make it easy to transport.Big House “The Great Escape” Chardonnay. Cozy up to this unoaked Chardonnay from California. Expect bold flavors like baked apple, vanilla and a touch of citrus that make this crisp and fruity vino great for sipping. Savor it while binging on recently released seasons of “Orange is the New Black” or “Bloodline” while in the company of a significant other.
“I would do something light that’s not going to make your breath smell weird,” advises Diane McMartin, certified sommelier and author of “This Calls for a Drink!,” who suggests avoiding fizzy wines in a can in this particular situation. “A fruity Chardonnay would be good with popcorn.” Just when you thought rosé couldn’t get anymore basic, the team behind White Girl Rosé released its sophomore endeavor: canned sparkling rosé. The bubbly pink wine is oddly refreshing and not overly sweet, with notes of watermelon and strawberry. The small, single-serving aluminum can resembles an energy drink-sized beverage perfect for discrete drinking. The four-pack is great for sharing on the beach. Three Thieves Bandit Merlot. This California, medium-bodied red was aged in French and American oak and comes compact in a cardboard container. The fruity wine is light and sweet with notes of blueberries, black cherries and vanilla. It pairs best with roast chicken, smoked pork and grilled vegetables and can easily be the life of the barbecue.
