buy wine from canada

My husband and I will be visiting Niagara Falls in June. I'm aware of the 2 bottle limit on liquor coming back into the US. Is there a limit on the amount of wine? We plan on visiting some wineries and I'd like to bring back 3 or 4 bottles. When we visit Canada, we always stop at the duty free to each pick up a bottle of the Sangster's Rum Cream (can't buy it in the States, only places we've found to buy it is Canada or Jamaica). Any help would be appreciated. I've checked duty-free websites but they only mention liquor. One destination mentioned in this post It would appear that the operative word is alcohol, whether it is liquor, wine or beer. From the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website: Can I bring back alcohol for my personal use or as a gift? Generally, one liter per person may be entered into the U.S. duty-free by travelers who are 21 or older, although travelers coming from the U.S. Virgin Islands or other Caribbean countries are entitled to more.

See our publication, "Know Before You Go" for additional information. Additional quantities may be entered, although they will be subject to duty and IRS taxes. Duty is generally 3% of value and the IRS excise tax is generally between 21-31cents per 750ml bottle of wine, 67 cents/champaigne, and $2.14/ hard liquor. It is not legal for travelers under the age of 21 to import alcohol - even as a gift. So on a $15 bottle of wine, duty and taxes would be less than a dollar. Might still be worth it for you.It definitely will be worth it. Looking forward to my visit! Fallsdude's given you good info, as usual. I would suggest, though, giving US Customs a quick call to make sure that the process of paying the duty and taxes is relatively easy. I know that if you bring in a lot of wine, you need all sorts of crazy paperwork -- state import permits etc. I'd hope bringing in a few bottles is as simple as popping into the office and paying the fees, but I wouldn't want you to get an unpleasant surprise...

best sweet red wine expensive I just called the border crossing agent in Detroit and they said only one bottle of liquor (wine, alcohol) per person if staying in a 24 to 72 hour period.

Pay duty on the rest. And from what FallsDude said earlier, duty won't be that much on 3 or 4 bottles. Thank you everyone for your input! Still going to bring back some of that Niagara wine. And to add BornToBike's comments, the border agent said once the crossing guy/gal asks anything to declare (like the extra bottles of liquor) they will just ask you to go into the duty center and look on the board to see your costs and pay right there. Sounds simple (I hope). If you don't overdo it (like filling the trunk with cases of wine), they just might decide to wave you through, rather than go to the trouble of doing the paperwork for the sake of a few bottles. No trunk full of wine. Just a few bottles... This may be slightly off topic, but a few years ago we cycled through the Loire Valley in France, and stopped in Saumur to visit some of the wineries. In the parking lot were two small RVs from England; the owners were rolling out dollies piled high with cases of wine and champagne.

When I approached the Brits to ask how much they would have to pay in tarifs and duties to bring the wine back into England, they told me that because they are part of the EU, there would be no financial penalties. In fact, they figured the amount they were saving would more than compensate for their travel expenses. When I explained that we Canadians would only be allowed to bring in a couple bottles each, he expressed surprise, and offered his sympathies.
