Is beer and wine sold in grocery stores in Colorado? Where is the best place to purchase? Full strength alcohol is not sold in grocery stores or convenient stores in Colorado (they sell 3.2%). Liquor stores are the only places with regular selection. However, if the state would change the grocery store law, we would probably get some Trader Joe's!!

Colorado does have some archaic liquor laws but at least you can buy it on Sundays now. There are a few stores in the Denver area where you can buy beer and wine; a Target, a Safeway a King Soopers that I've read about: Mainly you must go to a liquor store, and there are some good ones in Denver - Applejacks, Argonaut to name a couple.
red wine glass per dayIt depends on where you will be.
best places in europe for wine tasting (FYI, the liquor laws are not the reason there are no TJs in Colorado - it has to do with their distribution centers.)

Babalax, thanks for the TJ info! I just really wish they would come to CO!! Usually there are liquor stores right next to the major grocery stores. I saw many this last trip to the Denver area. Also it is great that finally you can buy alcohol on Sundays! TJ's is here in New Mexico, so drive on down to Santa Fe for your TJ's fix, lol!

cheap wine gas station Interesting side note on how state laws vary...... in SC you can buy beer and wine in a grocery store (even on Sunday now) but you can only buy liquor in a liquor store (and never on Sunday). Liquor stores carry wine also, but not beer. They are closed on any election day. When I lived in Pittsburgh in the early 90's, grocery stores sold no alcohol. Liquor stores had wine and liquor, but you had to go to a special beer store for beer.

Beer stores were often drive thru. Edited: 7:55 pm, August 14, 2010 EOS - Too funny, I am in Pittsburgh, and the rules haven't changed much. Liquor and wine are sold by state run stores, beer is sold by independent stores. Beer is now sold in grocery stores- a total of seven in the entire state. Sunday sales are now allowed with a special license and only between 12-5, convenient only if you need to make a beer run at half-time. Thanks all - I thought PA has the goofiest laws, but it sounds like CO is right up there. -:- Message from TripAdvisor staff -:-This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity. When I decided to write a column on where to get the best wine deals six weeks after grocery stores started selling wine, I thought it would be an easy piece to write. My hunch was that if you wanted the best wine prices, you should shop at the bigger wine and spirits stores. And if you just wanted convenience, you should just pick up your wine while you are doing your other grocery shopping.I thought it would be easy to compare the prices, by selecting a few inexpensive "Ms. Cheapish" brands and pricing them around town and plugging them into a neat little comparison chart. But alas, I found that it was a lot more complicated. Pricing was not as clear cut as I had expected and not all of the stores carry the same wines.I deliberately chose popular lower-priced wine brands like Black Box, Ecco Domani, Clos du Bois, Bota Box and Apothic Red — affordable, drinkable wines that I thought you could find everywhere. And I added one splurge pick — Meiomi Pinot Noir.I shopped at Kroger, Publix, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Costco, RED, Cool Springs Wines & Spirits, Frugal MacDoogal and Wal-Mart.My two picks that were available at all nine places were the Meiomi Pinot Noir and the Apothic Red.

For the Apothic, prices ranged from $12.29 at Publix to $8.79 at Costco. On Meiomi, Trader Joe's was the highest at $20.99 and the lowest was Cool Springs Wines at $16.98.The difference was a whopping $6.50 on a three-liter Black Box (which was carried by all of the stores except Trader Joe's and Costco), with Whole Foods the highest at $23.99 and Cool Springs Wines the lowest at $17.49.Ms. Cheap's wine guideCreate your own infographicsTrader Joe's is known for its signature low-end Charles Shaw wines, "Two Buck Chucks" (which now are actually $3.49 per bottle) and other low-priced bottles. While you will not find pedestrian wines like Yellow Tail or Black Box here, there are lots of boutique and Trader Joe exclusive wines, including a large selection of wines under $5 a bottle. (The highest price I saw was $50.) This would be a good place to buy a bottle of wine to take to a party or use as a gift, since almost no one would know how little the bottle cost. And where else can you find a 3-liter box of wine for $12!

The Green Hills Whole Foods wine section had some familiar brands but not as many as the more mainstream grocery stores like Kroger and Publix. Prices ranged from the 3 Wishes wine at $2.99 up to about $110 for a few specialty bottles, and there is a 10 percent discount if you purchase six bottles or more. Wine manager Shaun Burk said Whole Foods tries to have "the best wines from around the world" and said he expects the wine setup in his store to be expanded as customer preferences become clearer. He also mentioned a big sale coming up Aug. 19-20 in which most wines will be 20 percent off if you buy a case.At Kroger, not all stores are created equal and the larger stores have the larger wine sections, but pricing is consistent in all area stores. Kroger officials say you should disregard the higher "regular" white price tags on wine shelves and know that the real price is the yellow sale price tag, which is good for all shoppers (it has nothing to do with Kroger Plus). The two-tag system is a bit confusing, but the sale price is what the wine will ring up.

Other good news is that Kroger is starting a 10 percent case discount later this month, and it is already giving out free wine totes if you buy two or more bottles. The groceries said they expect their product mix to change as they determine customer preference and sales trends. For example, Costco officials said Black Box would be added to its inventory, and Kroger said sets could change as the wine in grocery evolves.Almost all of the stores now have low-end brands at rock bottom prices: Trader Joe's has Charles Shaw at at $3.49 a bottle, Kroger has Bay Bridge at $2.99, Whole Foods has 3 Wishes for $2.99, Wal-Mart has Oak Leaf for $2.86, and Costco has a $5.99 house wine. Even Piggly Wiggly has a cheapie, Cul-De-Sac for $3.59, which also is carried at RED at $2.99 per bottle. These bottom-rung wines are typically not eligible for case discounts or special extra sale prices.Grocers I talked to were "extremely happy" with the enthusiastic customer reception to them selling wine in their stores.

"I think some people who don't even drink wine bought wine the first few days," said Kroger's Melissa Eads. The large wine and spirits stores like RED Spirits and Wine, Frugal MacDoogal and Cool Springs Wines & Spirits say the impact of wine in the groceries has nicked their sales, but not as much as they feared."RED has noticed the impact of wine in groceries, but we haven't been impacted as much as we had made preparations for," said Bellevue co-manager Eric Nichols, adding that he thinks it will take a year to see how things "shake out.""However, I am told that there are (smaller) stores in the market that have suffered dramatically. I wouldn't necessarily say that the impact on RED is the norm for the market," Nichols said, adding, "I think the end result will be for all of the stores to be better stores."Frugal MacDoogal wine manager Jeff Warzynski said his downtown warehouse store has felt the new competition, but like RED, it has not affected sales as much as predicted.

"We were actually up for the Fourth of July," Warzynski said.So I guess I am back to square one on my wine advice: If you want the best prices, shop around! Some offer the case price on any case, while others do not offer it on a mixed case, and some offer it only on bottles priced at $10 or more. The wine shops generally have a wider selection of wine and a knowledgeable wine staff, trained to help customers plan events and determine how much wine is needed, and they offer pairing suggestions and other wine expertise. The wine stores have email lists and newsletters to let you know about sales and special deals. Most shops will carry your wine to your car.Advantages to buying at the grocery store: The grocery stores often have attractive sale prices on certain wines.

It is more convenient to pick up your wine while shopping for other groceries. Some groceries offer multiple bottle discounts. At Whole Foods, if you buy six bottles, you get 10 percent off; Publix has a 5 percent off on four to seven bottles, and 10 percent if you buy eight or more; and Kroger is working on a case discount formula that should be in place in the next couple of weeks.Tips for getting the most wine for your moneyBuy the 1.5-liter bottles instead of the 750 milliliter. You almost always get a better deal on the big bottles.Buy by the case to get a 10 percent discount on most wines. A Ms. Cheap special tip is that you can even buy box wine by the case. At most stores, three boxes equal one case, although some require four boxes.Prices change weekly at most stores and groceries, too. So watch the ads and sign up for the store's email lists to get notice of special sales and deals.Get to know the store staff so that you can ask about good deals or new varieties you might like.
