The Louisiana Legislature may deprive residents from simultaneously snacking and boozing on alcohol-infused ice cream. The House voted 46-44 Monday (May 5) against legislation that would make it legal for licensed liquor vendors to sell the wine or other alcohol-infused treat to people 21 or older. The bill needed 53 votes to advance Senate. It passed without objection out of a House committee last month after being twice tabled and tightened. The bill's sponsor, Rep. Marcus Hunter, D-Monroe, can bring it back for reconsideration.  Alcoholic-infused ice cream is illegal under the Louisiana's "adulterated foods" statute that also sets out rules for food sanitation. Alcohol ice cream has become a growing trend across the country, but legislative action is required in Louisiana and other states to sell it. Mercer's and Buzz Bar, two companies that make alcohol-infused ice cream, hired lobbyists Lenny Kopowski and Ruth Mignerey, respectively, to promote legalization of the product in Louisiana.

I don’t know about you, but personally I’m really struggling to come up with a problem in the world that a good tub of wine ice cream shouldn’t be able to solve. The only problem is that it’s currently only available in Mercer’s store in upstate New York which could result in serious uproar in other parts of the country and world. Could this be the next Cronut?! I think it just may be. I hope you have some good friends in upstate New York that are willing to wait in line for hours and hours, otherwise wine ice cream may seem but a distant dream for most of us. What a pity that would be. However, fret not my friends, it should only be a matter of time before other national and international vendors start to take notice. Please don’t keep us in suspense any longer, Mercer, I’m not sure how long we can take it. You can’t just tell us about this revolutionary inventing and not make it available to all of us! (Update: Apparently Mercer’s Dairy currently already exports its wine ice cream to 15 countries and counting and is now also available in 20+ States) Come on, are you seriously asking that question? It’s ice cream and wine all fused into one – do we really need to say any more? Arguably two of the best things known to man put together into one product. This is the real deal guys. We’re not talking about some “wine flavored ice cream” either… We have all tried that. That’s the easy stuff. The guys at Mercer actually take it up a notch. This is “wine infused” ice cream. In other words, there is real wine going into that ice cream with real alcohol inside and it packs a punch. It has about 5% alcohol contained within it so this one is definitely not for the kids. All jokes aside, you do actually have to be of legal drinking age to consume it.

Even though this is less alcohol content than what you might be used to when drinking a glass of wine, you’ll still get a decent wine-buzz while you’re chumping away at that tub of ice cream in front of the television. It’s a win-win in my opinion. You get the best of both worlds. Although we can’t express how happy we are with Mercer for putting this idea on the market, it definitely wasn’t an easy road for them. The biggest hurdle was actually trying to find a recipe that would freeze. For those of you familiar with the freezing properties of alcohol – they are next to none. It actually took years of trials for Mercer’s to ultimately create a recipe that froze, but when they finally did, it turned out amazing. The second hurdle was for them to find a way of legally being allowed to sell a liquor-infused food. This was prohibited in New York State laws at the time, and Mercer actually had to change state law in NY to be able to allow the sale of their wine infused ice cream.

Talk about dedication to your brand! Ever since this change was made, Mercers business grew exponentially to the extend where they are currently selling up to 300,000 gallons of ice cream per year. There’s definitely a lot of folks out there that love the idea of wine infused ice cream, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t one of them. For those wanting to give it a try, there is plenty of choice. They have a whopping 7 different flavors to choose from: Cherry Merlot, Chocolate Cabernet, Peach White Zinfandel, Port, Red Raspberry Chardonnay, Spiced and Riesling. I’ll have myself a nice tub of Chocolate Cabernet, thank you very much! In all honesty, I would love to try each and every one of them. They all sound very interesting. We would love to hear from those of you that have tried it. I honestly love the idea and can’t wait to get my hands on it. Let us know what you think.
