These wine deals are available online or in store. One of the nice things about having so many high quality wine blogs around is that on occasion people write articles that I was going to write, and simply save me the trouble. I had been sketching in my mind an article about the phenomenon of Flash Sale wine web sites -- you know, those sites that sell closeout wines in limited quantities for deep deep discounts -- but Jeff over at Good Grape wrote a very nice piece about them yesterday that says most of what I was interested in saying. Jeff contends that a shakeout of these sites is coming, and points to the acquisition of Woot!

last week as a harbinger of greater consolidation and/or lots of fallout in this space. I agree that such a shakeout is inevitable, but I disagree with Jeff about when. From everyone I've talked to, the amount of excess wine inventory on the market is truly massive. The consolidation in distributors in this country (from 7000 to 700 in the last 20 years according to Barbara Insel of Stonebridge Research Group) combined with the drop in demand for wine over $40 means that there are thousands of smaller wineries with millions of cases of expensive wine out there that most retailers, restaurants and distributors aren't touching with a ten foot pole. These wines will need to get sold somewhere, as they can't just sit around. They not only have to get out of the way for the next vintages that need to sit in the warehouse, they need to be turned into cash to pay for labor for the harvest, barrels for the next vintage, and all the other cash intensive aspects of keeping a winery going.

For more detail, see my article: The Coming Carnage in the California Wine Industry. How much inventory is out there? No one knows the complete answer, but I think it's plenty enough to easily support another year or two of these deep discounters, who will continue to proliferate (I know of two more waiting in the wings about to launch) until, as Jeff says, they start going "poof" just like the wine. Until then, there are some amazing deals to be had by anyone who has the means to be buying wine in this economy. Here's the list of the deep discounters / closeout artists / flash sales for wine that I know of: Wines 'til Sold Out Previous Entry - Main - Next EntryWho is Last Bottle? Is Ground Shipping always free?As long as you buy the minimum amount stated in the shopping cart then the shipping is on us. This applies to anywhere we ship in the U.S., but excludes Alaska and Hawaii. How long before I receive my wine? During our regular shipping season, your order ships within 2-5 business days. If your order isn't received in 10 business days, please email us. In the summer months (typically May-October) we will hold your order (if you select HOLD at checkout) until the temperatures have lowered to a safe shipping temperature.

I want you to ship my wine ground mid-July in a heat wave. The customer is always right! Well, this one has some conditions. Once the wine leaves the warehouse we aren’t responsible for it in any way though. You must understand, if we don’t recommend shipping because of a weather issue, there’s a good reason. Because there’s a mighty good chance your wine will have popped corks, leakage, and major heat damage. We will hold for free all until the weather cools (typically our heat holds run from June to early October). The wine that I want to order is no longer on the website. How do I order it?When it’s gone, it’s gone. Last Bottle buys as much as it can for the wine offers and generally we don’t see the same deal twice. I want to order over the phone or through email. All orders must be placed through the website. If you have special instructions please enter them into the customer comments box while placing your order. Please see the next question to understand why we do this.

Why can’t I call or drop by? Last Bottle is what we call "lean and mean." We run a tight ship with no frills, and that’s to keep prices down, and keep the deals coming. Being "email only" lets us consolidate our efforts and energy into doing just that. Why don’t all of my credits appear? For the sake of a more simple and beautiful design, we elected to round down to the nearest whole dollar. So, if you have $3.68 in credits, it will appear as $3. But don’t worry you'll be credited the full amount upon checkout, our systems are capable of handling the math! It is too hot to ship now but I want to buy today's wine. We will hold your order for up to 6 months if the weather is too hot. In the summer months, we can offer refrigerated shipping at a discounted rate. Email us for details. How do I return a defective product? We stand behind every bottle we sell; and we know that sometimes you can get a bad bottle (just like with a dozen eggs or a dozen oysters, right?).

If you feel you have a bad bottle, please let us know via email. We'll take care of it for you. Can I use a faster shipping method? We can also offer Overnight Shipping and 2 day air at reduced costs. Wine is heavy and the cost to ship faster is expensive, but as always we will quote you the lowest price we can. Do you insure your shipments? You have the option upon checkout to insure your package. It will cost you 1% of the purchase price for full insurance. What if the shipment is lost or damaged? We will fix it for you, to your satisfaction. What payment options do I have? You can pay using VISA, MasterCard, and American Express. We do not accept checks or money orders. Can I send my order as a gift?Who doesn't like wine as a gift? Just let us know in the comments section, and we'll include a card and make sure NOT to include an invoice. What is your cancellation policy? If you need to cancel your order for whatever reason, please email us!
